Is Blachman Sexist?
The Danish are a very progressive people, leading the way with many social issues. However there is a new Television show on Danish TV, that has sparked a lot of controversy in western (read non European) media. The show has two male presenters, Thomas Blachman and a celebrity guest, who sit on a couch in a darkened studio, with just one large light. A woman wearing a robe walks on and stands in front of the men. She then takes her robe off and stands totally nude before them. The two men then start to discuss the womans body in great detail, making notes and appreciating her form. Is this sexist, or living nude art?
Most mainstream TV programs are calling it sexist and of course many women's groups are very upset by this. However is it a bad thing? After all, what if it were a photo of a nude woman standing in front of them. Would that make a difference? How about a painting, a sculpture? What if they were in an art gallery? I must confess I don't speak Danish, so i don't know exactly what they are talking about, but from what I saw and what I heard from people who do, the men are appreciating the female form just like they would a photo, painting, or a sculpture? What if the roles were reversed. If it were two women appreciating a nude male, or two women appreciating a nude women, or two men about a male nude? I am sure no matter what combination is used, there will always be someone who would get upset.
What really is the problem, is people's hangups about nudity in general. It is not about a nude woman standing naked in front of men, but about the viewers own insecurities about nudity. An insecurity, pounded into their minds, a form of social conditioning. if the conditioning is challenged, then they react in a very negative way. People get over it. It is just a nude body. We all have one. I for one love the idea and hope it becomes a franchise. I would rather watch the Blachman Show, than some insipid talent show, or renovation lunacy. Maybe it will be up to Nude-Muse Magazine to take the step, like we did with cookings shows with our very own Cooking In The Raw.
