Stress Kills - How To Cope Naturally

STRESS - a fairly common word. How many people really understand all its implications? To a scientist, stress is defined as "any action or situation that places special physical or psychological demands upon a person - anything that can unbalance an individual's equilibrium".

Everyday we are exposed to stress, from going to work, making an appointment, paying bills, bad bosses the list goes on.

Miranda demonstrates how you can go from stress to relaxed, by meditation, exercise, stretching and good diet. This article will explain other ways to cope as well.

To me, stress means high blood pressure, a red face, frothing at the mouth, bloody fingernail marks in my palms, irritability, frustration, rushing and generally just being a total maniac.

Stress: the confusion created when the mind overrides the body's basic desire to choke the living daylights out of some jerk who desperately deserves it.

How to Treat Stress Naturally

When we are faced a stressful incident, our brain immediately responds. It signals our body to release adrenaline & noradrenaline for a massive mobilization of energy - in other words; the fight or flight response. It's an adrenaline rush, and short term, this response is good. However, prolonged exposure to this reaction is not good. Continued exposure to external (I'm late) or internal (I'm worried) triggers can lead to a state of chronic anxiety, which makes enormous demands on the mind and body. Accelerated heart and breath rates, increased perspiration, high levels of adrenaline and cortisol in the blood, elevated muscle tension, persistent worry, and emotional distress all take their toll on the nervous system. This state of "hyperarousal" can result in mental and physical exhaustion and increased susceptibility to disease. The excess release of "stress" hormones can result in high blood pressure, a narrowing of the artery walls and altering of the immune system. As a result, our bodies may form free radicals-undesirable chemicals that have long been implicated in degenerative diseases such as cancer and in hastening the aging process. When the body's energy reserves become depleted, the adrenal glands can no longer function efficiently. The result can be a decreased ability to cope with stress and chronic anxiety. The body reacts adversely and conditions such as ulcers, hypertension, fatigue, backache, atherosclerosis, allergic reactions, asthma and insomnia often develop.

The increase in the production of adrenal hormones which occurs with stress, increases the metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates, producing instant energy for the body to use. As a result of this increased metabolism, there is also an increased excretion of protein, potassium and phosphorus and a decreased storage of calcium. Many of the disorders related to stress are not a direct result of the stress itself, but a result of nutrient deficiencies caused by increased metabolic rates during periods of stress.

"75-90% of primary physician visits are due to stress"

Vitamin C is utilised by the adrenal gland during stressful conditions and any stress that is sufficiently severe or prolonged, will cause a depletion of Vitamin C in the tissues. Vitamin C helps to protect the tissues from increased oxidation damage during stress.

Vitamin E another effective antioxidant, vitamin E must be in continuous supply since it can take days to replenish lost reserves.

Vitamin B Complex required for normal function in every cell. The B vitamins help release energy from food you eat. They also replenish and protect the immune system during times of stress.

Zinc supports the immune system. Zinc may reduce susceptibility to infection during times of stress.

Calcium important for proper nerve and muscle performance. Calcium reserves usually significantly diminished by stress.

Magnesium the release of adrenalin causes magnesium to be flushed out of the body. Magnesium allows muscles to relax and helps maintain regular heart rhythm.

Laughter: The Best Stress Reducer

Laughing lowers levels of stress hormones and strengthens the immune system. 6 year olds laugh an average of 300 times per day. Adults only laugh an average of 15 - 100 times per day.

Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline), dopamine & growth hormone. It also increases the level of health-enhancing hormones like endorphins, and neurotransmitters. Laughter increases the number of antibody-producing cells and enhances the effectiveness of T cells.
